Trip to Morocco, 37 years after

back

In november 2000, I made a trip to Morocco. I took the plane to Rabat an then with a rental car, I drove 1200 km through Larache, Tanger, Chefchaouen, Fès, Ifrane, Azrou, and Meknès.

In family pictures, I found some evidences of a similar trip in 1963, passing as well by the towns of Rabat, Meknès and Fès. I present here theses beautiful printings of 1963, placing them opposite to some pictures I made during my trip with a pocket APS camera and a black and white chromogenic film.

In that way, we can see how Morroco had modernized (cars, non traditional clothes, satellite dishes on the roofs of Fès) while keeping its traditions (workshops in the souks and the tanneries, médinas).

Two differents views of the square in front of the Kasbah of the Oudaïas.

The square was used as a parking lot in 1963. It's now a friendly place where guides are awaiting tourists during the day and where peoples are meeting on the evening.

Meknès

The Bab Mansour gate built during the reign of the sultan Moulay Ismaïl.

In the year 2000, djellabas are not often worn, and as in europeans countries, cars are everywhere.

Fès

In the médina of Fès, it seems that nothing had changed. Small alleys follow each other in a no ending way, between souks and mosques, between fountains and medersas.

Fès

Here, in the quarter of tanneries, the work is the same and the tradition is lasting.

The médina, seen from a terrace roof, is now overwhelmed with tv antennas and satellite dishes.

The médina of Fès-El-Bali seen from surrounding hills. From far, we see no changements, and the town is still mysterious.
